Former Called Up Coach Rouwenhorst throws Complete Game Shutout in AAA

From minorleaguebaseball.com

Richmond Braves left-hander Jonathon Rouwenhorst is proof of the old adage that good things come to those who wait.

The 28-year-old left-hander, who has been playing pro ball since 2001, tossed a five-hitter for his first career complete-game shutout Saturday as the Braves blanked the visiting Norfolk Tides, 4-0.

Rouwenhorst (5-2) struck out three and walked one as he threw just 97 pitches and lowered his ERA to 3.25.

"I'm feeling pretty good tonight," he said. "It's a good thing when you can get through a game, be efficient and save the bullpen.

"When it was getting toward the end of the game, I was still feeling good, but I didn't know how many pitches I had thrown," he added. "I was just hoping the coaches would let me finish the game."

Rouwenhorst, who signed with the Angels as a non-drafted free agent in 2001, joined the Braves' organization last November after going 10-10 with a 4.96 ERA for Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.

The California native has made 13 appearances, including seven starts, this season. He said he prefers the starting role and made a good case for staying in it on Saturday.

"I was able to keep my fastball down, get ahead of hitters and get my offspeed pitches over the plate," he said. "I'm not a strikeout pitcher. My goal is to get ahead of the hitters, make them hit the ball and have the defense make plays. My defense did a great job tonight."
